Slaves used to use braids as a route how to escape plantations. Braids have a LONGGGGGG meaning behind it. Also, braids are meant to keep scalps cooler, so they don’t overheat. It’s a lot of things too it. It’s based on survival essentially, it’s not fashion 🙆‍♀️

Yes it's a very sensitive subject for black people. Some black people think other races are stealing their styles or trying to be black especially black women.
