How did you used to dress in high school?

I'm curious to see how people dressed when they were teenager and if they changed or not their style now that they're older.

I used to dress in football or lacoste tracksuit with nike shoes all the time when I was a teen or full on preppy (depending on which days it was as certains teacher were had a very harsh dress code where they forbbiden everything).

Now I'm dressing in tweed set with high heels or dress and heels / white sneakers.

I entered public high school in the fall of 1969 and graduated in 1972. I had come out of Catholic school, so I was really straight at first. I had a regular haircut and wore conservative clothes. But I was interested in hippies and psychedelia. I was a guitarist. And I had started learning how to surf the summer before.

I fell into the surfer, hippie, rocker culture in high school. I also liked muscle cars and customized race cars.

So I wore bell bottomed pants, usually Levis. One pair of denim jeans were dark blue with black swirls that, if you looked closely, were renaissance faces.
I had one pair or red, corduroy bell bottoms.

I sometimes wore a belt that looked like a colorful guitar strap. Usually, I just a black, leather belt with an embossed Celtic knot patter, and a gold, Celtic design buckle.

I sometimes wore Beatle boots. I had two pair - one in back leather and one in brown suede.
They were shaped kinda like these, but smooth. They had a zipper on the side.

I sometimes wore black shoes that looked like moccasins with low heels.
And, sometimes I wore sneakers. Brand name sneakers weren't a thing back then.

I wore a variety of shirts. T-shirts with printed designs on the chest, or concert T-shirts. But I wore other kinds of shirts, too. Some of them were colorful or had printed fabric.
I wasn't into tie-dye. I rarely wore button shirts or shirts that tucked in.

On cold days, I had a bomber jacket that I wore sometimes. And I also had a long, brown corduroy coat.

I started growing my hair long. By the end of high school, it was over my shoulders. So I sometimes wore a headband or used a colorful scarf for a headband.

I had a black, felt hat with a wide, flat brim and a round top. I creased the top and trained the front of the brim downward a bit. I would use colorful fabric with different patterns for hat bands. I didn't wear that to school.

Sometimes I would tie a colorful scarf around my thigh.

I was lead guitar and vocals in a garage band, so I tried to look like a rock star.

I was a teen in the late 90s to early 2000s. I was part of the punk rock and metalhead scene so I dressed in cargo pants, jeans, band tees, trench coats, and leather jackets. I was in a punk rock band for a while and a metal band.

After entering university, I was more obsessed with history than before, particularly the 1920s and 1940s. I began dressing more classy and stopped wearing casual clothes. It started with a Mod style in my early 20s. I was wearing plaid shirts, boots, chinos, and corduroy pants. In my mid 20s, I slowly moved on to an authentic 1950s and 1940s look with tweed suits, trousers, brogue shoes, striped shirts etc which I gathered at thrift shops and reproduction stores. I added a lot of authentic 1920s clothes to my collection since then.

A lot of the girls thought I was quite the handsome gentleman. Some said they wished their boyfriend dressed like me. There were a couple of girls that wore 1950s/1960s dresses as well.

Of course there were a lot of negative reactions too. Trying too hard, weirdo, overdressed, "extra", etc. Not that I care at all. I think society got too underdressed.

I'm pretty surprised by the girls reaction here they wouldn't have like it (which is ironic as Im' supposed from the capital of fashion XD).
Only women I know who wore 50 / 60s dress are pretty old in their 40s.

Underdressed that's sure but so long as everyone is free to wear what they want it's ok, I mean it's better than forcing people to wear stuff they don't like

Actually we still have it, French girl style is so popular nowadays it's everywhere on internet. Full of tweed, blouse, bow, mary jane, high sock, etc...
There's lots of well dressed people in France too, you just didn't went anywhere.

Oh I saw a few well dressed folks too. But, not enough to be called the fashion capital of the world anymore. I saw way more in other countries. I'm a big admirer of the French style though, especially the makeup. Much nicer than American makeup.

Honestly it really depend on which area you where in, some will have lots of nicely dressed people and others would have really the worst fashion of France.
I don't think any city can be called fashionable though, most fashion of now is most jeans and sneakers. It's extremely laid back now.

I was dressed strictly at elementary school, then the middle school of my district was in a poor area, so I dressed accordingly to the norms of the place, Populaire, unconsciously forced to conformity. Then my high school was located in an upper-middle class area, this time again, pressure for conformity, for another dress code, not the same one. Amusingly, I thought I was going against some sort of trend, where in fact I was still conforming to a trend, a trend consisting in not conforming lol

I don't know exactly what my dress code is these days, I just know intuitively which style I want to wear, city casual? With twists? Consciously I'm not trying to follow a specific trend. But in the background I know that what I wear is not exactly a personal choice, it's socially significant, I'm still bound to invisible forces, without knowing what they are, it's unclear, and I find that amusing...

I think I'm just following what's considered as cool and popular, when in high school I had two dress code one was professional when I had my professional class (half my week was spend in professional class Bac pro) and the others spend in regular class where I could dress how I wanted, when I dressed how i wanted I dress in tracksuit as it was what was considered as cool and popular (in middle school I was bullied a lt the first years cause I didn't had any fashion sense since I come from the countryside in a school where we were only 3 children in CM2 and I was in a shock when people harassed me for not dressing cool, I wore tunique and legging and all of them wore either skinny jeans with caban / leather jacket or tracksuit), as a teen I wanted to dress as they do in manga (over the knee sock with shorts skirt blouse and cardigan with mocassin) but couldn't because people would have bullied since my high school was situated in a "banlieu" so I just wore the cute fashion during the week end and wore tracksuit to school to fit in.

Now as an adult I'm into more fancy looks I guess it's cause those tweed looks are very trendy in Japan / Korea and I like to follow their fashion I think it's cute but also follow popular French style, , now I only wear the tracksuit for when it rain or I'm lazy or when it's really cold and I don't want to bother wearing layer.

My father also hate feminine fashion and always wanted me to dress like him in tracksuit, my mother was the reverse wanted me to be feminine and wear skirt and blouse.

Around town/school I mostly wore Rock n Roll or travel shirts with Khaki shorts or cargo pants with white socks and tennis shoes. If it was cold I would wear a sweater with hood and zipper

Then I had my Jeff Corwin adventure clothes with Indiana Jones hat and sometimes long plaid shirts

These days, my casual clothes haven't changed much. Though I wear caps more frequently now and sometimes if it's chilly I'll throw on a flannel.

But for my adventure clothes, I don't wear my Indiana Jones hat or Jeff Corwin clothes much anymore. I mostly wear my travel t shirts with Khakis (past knees) or cargo pants. If I need long sleeves I'll throw on a flannel plaid. Occasionally I'll wear these... I don't know what style this is

I often have trouble buying clothes abroad because the sizes are so different. Even some of the ones we get from Asia, their sizes are different. And I bought some shoes in Turkey and only wore them once because they were so uncomfortable, which is weird because I tried them on in the store.

I buy clothes from Japan quite a bit and they're all free size which is my perfect size no problem so I don't have any trouble with Asian size. Same for Korea their free size fit me good.

Shoes can get uncomfortable if worn a long time but be comfortable if worn just a couple of minute so it's hard to know

a teen in high school I tried to fit in like any teen. I would a lot of baggy clothes and switched from briefs to boxers. Wearing boxers had its own issues and baggy clothes was comfortable but I ended up getting lost in it. I was skinner back then.

A lot of the girls wore really small/tight clothes. Think low rise jeans, crop tops, shorts that look like a pair mens trunks underwear, I don’t think thongs caught on because I don’t remember any whale tails in class though the hole in the chair in the back so it probably was fullback panties

Those were forbidden at some of my schools too. Although flip flops were allowed in middle school and high school, and shorts weren't forbidden, unless they were like REALLY short. Shorts were only forbidden in Christian schools on Friday.
But some of the girls in middle school still dressed like sluts.

I came home one day and told my parents, "Did you know that dinosaurs co-existed alongside humans after all? Alongside Adam and Eve?" My parents, especially my dad were like, "WTF? What are they teaching you in that place?" Even my mom who's quite religious was pissed. Another time the teacher took us to a planetarium then was complaining that the guy told us the planets were made by gasses. She was like, "We know GOD made them." Then another time I, I had those pants that turned into shorts, and it was 100 degrees outside, and I got scolded by the janitor of all people for wearing shorts on a Friday. One time my mom wore a skirt on Friday, then sent everyone home a letter about it. And another time the teacher told my mom to collect some dirt and the teacher got pissed at her and said, "What is this? I can't plant anything in this." My mom told her, "You told me to bring you dirt, not soil." XD

Anyways... this is why I hated when teachers would say to raise your hand if you're some denomination of Christianity. As a Catholic, I HATE being thrown in with those Protestant nutjobs. I always tell people I'm Catholic or Roman Catholic.
I don't know if you know Gwendolyn on here, but she feels the same. She's British, but she's Catholic and considers them completely separate from Christians.

They really ARE! I worked with some and they believe in the craziest shit! Me and this one guy would often argue. Another guy claimed to have a degree in micro-biology yet didn't believe in evolution or that life formed billions of years ago. The other guy didn't believe in carbon dating. The biologist guy claimed to be a Catholic, but there was no way in hell he was a Catholic.

Well, the Orthodox Church is closest to the original. I went to mass once and visited some churches and communities. They have some weird rituals, but at least they don't bother or bully anyone.
Christian Scientists and Pentecostals are the craziest! Children have died because they believed God would heal them and the Pentecostals speak in tongues and play with vipers.
One girl at my work was Protestant and left her church because they were making them go barefoot. Her mom complained to the head of the diocese and they did NOTHING!
Don't even get me started on Mormons. We had a Mormon church call campus police on me amd friends, because we would go there during lunch and kick a WATER BOTTLE around in their parking lot. We never left any trash, and they literally complained that there was water in their parking lot! And one day a cop came and kicked us off their property! They didn't even have the balls to talk to us themselves. How pathetic!

High School was really in two parts. During 10th and 11th grade there was a dress code. the boys had to wear shirts ties and a jacket or sweater. Out class demonstrated and we got the dress code abolished.. After that I wore blue jeans and t shirts. mostly the same as what I wear now. I had these t shirts that had contrasting colors. I probably had 6 of them all different colors. I wore those for years until they disintegrated.

I guess it's because of the skin complexity. A lot of them are tanned and they may look "natural" if they wear it because the Philippines is hot. The same goes with guys being shirtless. And if we see white people wearing the same, they get different reactions. It's because we don't get used to seeing them wearing like those. It's also because of poverty that we see a lot of shirtless guys and girls wearing revealing clothes. But if you are wealthy even if you're tanned, you can be judged as if you're one of those people in the poverty line. It's mostly the school and the parents who would judge not the other kids their age.

It's just that we get surprised and guys would talk behind their back saying how hot she is. Same reaction from girls with white guys actually. It's just a mindset. I think on theory, the darker your skin is, rhe more natural you look wearing revealing clothes is because of the ancestors. Dark skin = hot country = minimal outfits. That's what tribes wear and it would feel wrong if you look so white wearing tribal outfit because as humans, we may not evolve to get used to it since white skin = cold country = thick clothing.

That actually make sense is it true that White countries usually did not wear revealing clothes before until the late 60s people needed to wear very modest clothes and Even now in some area revealing clothes are seen in a bad light. A lot of guys where I live forbid their girlfriend from wearing skirt and dress or showing cleavage.

Too White skin under the skin burn it nearly never tan, i make sure to always cover my shoulder clevage and thigh if not I get sunburn and it hurt so much. White skin is not made to be under the strong sunlight. Many White people like to tan though cause they dislike the look of pale skin like women would wear thight Even in the summer if they want to wear a shorts if they got pale skin to hide it.

I would oppose the idea of girls wearing revealing clothes as well. Specially in a country where people care so much about it. It's called a precaution. And it's not like girls are the only ones getting unfair treatment when it comes to dress codes. A lot of girls can wear guys clothings no problem but vice versa it can be weird. Guys have way less clothing options than you think and those girls who really demand to wear more of whatever they want just shows more of her entitlement.

Also for teachers, social workers, and I suppose even more areas. When looking closer, even people in conservative areas like banking are dressed less strictly than 20 years ago. @Maybe_Maybe_not I personally find it sloppy to dress this ways to work but after I spend 3 years in a professional school where everything was banned (jeans, logo, t shirt, basket, hoodie, sweatshirt, etc...). I was in bac pro gestion administration. In those school / class the dress code is absolutely hell and in all job I had in secretary / computability / Mairie and vendeuse en pret a porter I always had very strict dress code personally.
I guess I was into '"old school" company though my teacher really insisted we should absolutely never wear jeans or a shirt or sneakers as is it extremely unprofessional. Social worker in my area dress very professional always in dress and skirt and when wearing pants they wear dark pants; I never saw any wearing jeans and always paired with a blouse and blazer.

Yep, I understand the influence here, it's a certain area you've spent some time living in. An area praising a certain type of clothes, per tradition, a quite strict area. It's logical that this area wants to press conformity to a certain style, because the work to be done is a rigid one, not much room for diversity would be allowed or respected.

But this is one circle among all other circles forming a bigger system. In the end, clothes are just appearances we use to convey a certain message, to feel represented, to send the signal that we belong to a certain circle. Appearances though. Masks.

@Maybe_Maybe_not Yes diversity is definitely not allowed one time I wore sneakers to work (but it was small thin black one similar to converse) and I got comment from my coworker, like she showed me her shoes, kind of laughed, said they were profession and practicable etc...(it was low heeled black heels) so I got the message that converse like sneakers even in black leather weren't ok to wear.

Kind of suck in the end I don't really know who I'm or what I like anymore as my style always change depending on where I go (my grandfather house, my grandmother house, work, high school, if I go to a big city or the countryside, etc...
