Was classic red nail polish more common in the 1980s or 1990s?

Today, it seems that nail art is very popular. I was looking at a picture of my aunt (posted), and noticed that she had basic red nail polish. Then, I was looking at some other pictures from that period, and they all had basic red nail polish. This makes me ask the question if nail art is a relatively recent think, and was basic red nail polish more popular in the 1980's and 1990's?

I know that it was a very popular color in the late 80's and earlier 90's.

Back then employees dressed up for working in an office. Women wore dress skirts, a nice white blouse and a blazer and heels. 👠 👠 💄 We also wore nice dresses and dress pants suited for the office.
So, red was a very popular color of nail polish 💅🏼 to wear. It went well with black and navy blue suits.

I still wear it around the Christmas holiday.

My grandmother only wore red nail polish and had nice long red nails.

When I was a kid my mom wore red on her nails and for a while I thought that red was the only color nail polish came in.


It was a huge revelation when I first saw black nails then later yellow and blue and green, before entering the era of white nails (my second favorites honestly)
And now we live in a time where people turn their nails into modern paintings

I don't remember nail polish of the 80s, I was most likely not interested in that lol. But I do think red was the leading colour for this time, which also means red looks old to me, on anyone's nails.

In the 90s, I think black looked popular, well, popular in a niche for youngsters lol. Then I believe the 2000s progressively brought the full palette to life. Which I'm happy with because I'm really not a fan of red, or black, in that context

Women wear nail art for themselves and their friends. It's not attractive to the men I know. To me, nail art screams HIGH MAINTENANCE. Classic red nails, not too long, still rule. Maybe French tips. That's enough.
