What causes girls to have the electra complex?

I think it's simple.
Growing up, a girl's father is the one male whom she feels safe with and _knows_ will protect her and care for her.

As she grows up and begins to have sexual feelings, part of becoming a woman is having her other instincts come on-line also. Females at an instinctive level want safe home environments to raise families. Thus, over countless generations, females select males who come across as better at caring for and protecting the family and who also can pass along genes so any sons produced will be similar. Look at how women are turned on by alpha types and, more often than not, get turned on by being submissive - these are side-effects of evolution.

Returning to dad, in the eyes of the daughter, who is the best protector? Dad. When she compares him to other "boys" (who act immature and just want to get laid), Dad obviously is a better choice for making babies with. This is also one reason why many women have "older man" fetish. If they can't have Dad, they want Dad's friends.

Other people aren't systems engineers or physicists or biologists. In science, we use something called Occam's Razor ("Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.") and any good scientific theory not only explains one phenomenon but others as well. When it comes to human feelings and decisions and fetishes and, most of all, instincts, evolution explains pretty much everything.

According to Freud, the Electra complex is a normal part of the developmental process for girls, just as the Oedipus is for boys. Girls grow out of it by sublimating their jealousy of their mother and emulating her, just as boys are supposed to overcome the Oedipus complex and identify with their fathers.

It was only his theory, and Freudians are rare nowadays.

Lack of independence from their parents can develop electra complex. Lack of attention from her father or overall absence from her father can also develop electra complex. The unconscious desire to replace their mother for their father's attention can also develop electra complex. It really varies.
