What does it mean when a guy says "you're mine"?

My boyfriend says that I'm his woman. He says "you're my woman and my lover".
He doesn't say girlfriend. He likes to say lover.

What do guys mean when they say "you're mine"?

He feels like this is a higher compliment than simply calling you his girlfriend. There are girlfriends who are not lovers and who some guys don’t place a high value on. What he is saying is that he has actively claimed you are you are his lover, as he is your lover. That’s a higher ring of honor than merely being his girlfriend

In my past relationship it meant more along the lines of your the only person for me or a statement of loyalty etc. I don't know about your boyfriend though, that can be taken a few different directions
