I am an college student. I met this girl from my class about a year and a half ago and we got quite close. She really liked me and so whenever we met in class or during internship activities we would joke a little bit with each other. She had a boyfriend back then.
Over time I began to see her differently and develop romantic interest in her. So I slowly started flirting with her, first in a light way then gradually a little more explicitly. Jokes, teasing, light physical contact. She reciprocated, but I wasn't really convinced that she was interested and I thought it was just friendly behavior.
After about a month where we hardly ever met, we started seeing each other again regularly in class, and here she escalated in her behavior toward me. Jokes, teasing, laughing at me, throwing stuff at each other, often coming to me to talk. And I did the same. A deep feeling had developed between us. She really was into it. I wasn't exactly sure if she was just playful behavior or flirting with me.
Then literally within a weekend this month she started showing detached toward me, stopping all those behaviors and barely talking to me in class. I later found out that a few months ago she broke up with her boyfriend. I'm not sure, but even her female college classmates seem to act strangely toward me.
What is the significance of this behavior? Because I was thinking of asking her out before all this.
