No, I know it is required for some sports by guys
I would mainly just be confused about who hits him in the nuts so often that he has to wear one of those things in his day-to-day life
you'd be surprised how often guys in their teens and 20s whack each other in the nuts. Guys aren't exactly comforting when girls comfort other girls.
Now that you mention it, I remember some old roommates almost making a sport out of it at some point. If the context is there, I'd find it funny/good thinking
