Depends on the context, if you are fitting an engine into an commercial airline say, you really really need to follow exactly what is written down and what others involved in the fitting of the engine are saying. You definitely cannot do your own thing.

For many, at least, because having own interests or views requires thoughts.
Unless they have downloaded the "Own Thing App" - free of advertising for a small fee, that is.
