I wish more men would dress sexier. Women have been doing said for a long time. And by sexier, I merely mean, with a fashion sense. Not so blah.

The suit uniform for (most) men is de-sexualizing. And I believe men dressing sexy threatens OTHER men, so they Do Not do it, in general. With gay men, it seems to not be so big of a deal, likely because gay men LIKE to see other gay men dress sexy--whether they're involved with them, or not. Gay men can compliment other gay men and it doesn't emasculate them or sexually threaten them. Women do the same.

But among straight men this might mean a may IS gay, in some corriders.

It has to do with longstanding biological precepts. Straight men are competing against each other, but not in a fashion sense. In a masculinity sense that doesn't register as strongly among them as looking sexy does for women competing for men. They don't want to send mixed signals to gay men, that's some of it.

The rest is not knowing how to dress sexy and smart as well.

"Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," is an example of this. However, I think smart guys with good self-esteem know that how you dress doesn't mean anything about your sexuality. It has to do with how confident you are in your fashion sense, and how much you pay attention to fashion trends and whether you create your own style cobbled from classic fashion, what's current and what you've made yours.

And the opposite factor? Women who want to be taken seriously for their intelligence and skills are unlikely to dress sexy to walk the streets, ahem. Because they don't want to be mistaken for women who ARE walking the streets.

There are times and places that sexy dressing is OK. But unless you're very young and unaware of how sexy dressing might affect perfect strangers, it is safer to not be overtly sexy. And in the workplace, you could be called to task for flashing too much boob, leg or ass. You are AT WORK.

In the arts there is far more lattitude in dressing sexy for women and men. But few people work in the arts. And dressing up is usually reserved for special occasions.

Few women are dressing sexy to ride the bus, subway or walk about, especially if they're alone. It's not particularly safe, either. I'd not advertise what I wasn't selling, so to speak.
