It is common. Very often though they're very quick to prescribe anti-depressants, which aren't often the best solution. If anything they either made me worse, or they made me feel like a zombie, and that's very common.
There are a lot of things that can cause depression. If it's a physical/hormonal problem, often poor diet, poor sleep, poor exercise etc. You're better off focusing on these things and loving a more healthy life first before considering tablets, as it's always better to fix these things naturally than to rely on drugs. I know that when I do these things I feel a lot better in myself.
If that doesn't work obviously go to the doctor's.

Write down your symptoms before you go there and what areas of your life are being affected, such as: can't sleep at night, lethargy, you feel like hiding in your house, you have a bleak outlook on things, unhealthy eating patterns, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy.. that kind of stuff.
