I do t feel like there are that many people throwing birth control tablets away. Most people who have a prescription for them just take them.

Um... you *do* know that tap water gets very thoroughly filtered and processed, right? There are issues with wastewater affecting wildlife, but that's not the stuff we get out of the tap.
