Would you get an open heart or brain surgery?

Would you get a heart, brain surgery? No matter how terrified/ scared you are? Worried you might not make it? My mom is 63 years old, obese, Smoker, diabetic. She is trying to quit still :(. She just had a angiogram test done few days ago and even for that we were so scared. It took her 3 months to finally agree. Shorty before that she was admitted to hospital for 5 days. She was starting to get heart failure, nausea, difficulty breathing, light headedness. She is on medication to protect against heart attacks.

So we thought they were going to put a stent in the arteries. Angioplasty. I think she has multiple arteries problems like 5. 2 of them is 100%, 1 is 70%, 1 is 85%, 1 is 65% blocked. She feels more comfortable to go for angioplasty than open heart surgery. You’re at most risk for death within 30 days. She’s going to see her surgeon next week to discuss it. I am sure he will say no one can force you but I hope he won’t refuse her for angioplasty. I am sure something is better than nothing. Just wanted to get some opinions. Thank you.

Sometimes the choice is made for you! My son contracted bacterial meningitis, septicemia (blood poisoning) bacterial endocarditis (heart valve infection) and double pneumonia, and he was on life support. First came the bacteria meningitis which led to the rest of the other illness'.
Then one day while he was in the hospital the doctor announced that he needed emergency open heart surgery. So, he didn't have a choice.
He lived through all of that and I know it had to be a miracle from God!

That's a lot of blockage for just angioplasty, and the stents only last about 5 or 6 years. Diabetes rips up the insides of blood vessels, and the smoking and obesity make things hundreds of times harder. Those are 3 of the 5 deadly risks. They could do angioplasty and see how long it lasts, you could get lucky, but the odds are against it and you would still be faced with the open heart surgery later. If it's 20 years later you're doing ok, but if it's 2 years later that's a lot of stress on the body.

Of course. A scary operation is, y'know, scary, but you KNOW you won't make it if you don't. This is not a hard choice.

I've HAD surgery; they knock you out before it happens. Either you come to in the recovery room or you come to before Saint Peter. All YOU have to do is lay there.

It sucks but most people come out on the other side with a better quality of life. I got a total hip replacement a few years ago. It was a tough operation and the rehab took a few months but my quality of life is better and most of the pain I had is gome

If open heart surgery gives me a better chance, I would. This requires research. So you need to acquire knowledge and wisdom: the right application of knowledge. However, having God by your side is something vital to any life altering situation.

Ironically I am having heart surgery in a couple months. It's not a thrilling prospect. But still better than the alternative.

And if it makes you feel any better my mother has been in heart failure for 20 years. She's still kicking. Ofc she quit smoking after being diagnosed with it.

I'd go with whatever my doctor recommends. Heart attacks are so common in the South that we have hospital complexes dedicated only to heart attacks and strokes. They know what they're doing.

I would have to rely on doctors and specialists to make that decision based on my specific condition and needs.

It entirely depends upon my quality of life afterwards. All things being equal I would get the surgery if it's a chance to live a little bit longer in some kind of fashion rather than just existing.
