Have you noticed that the people who say they are happily married are generally >55 years old?

Younger than that (35-49), they’re either having problems or contemplating divorce. Younger still (20s and 30s), they’re getting married and feel like they’ve got it all figured out

I think the older one gets the more easily one realises the things that will make them happy and that it's not likely that you should stress too much about seeking happiness ALL THE TIME. It's not possible. The ups and downs are what makes life worth living.

i guess my question is did those people come to that realization on their own and have a better second marriage or did they learn this the hard way and suffered through until they got to the point of satisfaction

or do people who get married later in life end up happier?

I think the older you get the more resilient and less extreme the emotional rollercoaster of life becomes. You learn to be more accepting, less demanding, able to regulate and not slip into doom and despair when the hormonally control reward system of emotional experience, becomes more manageable It's almost like you get more used to life.

Meet a girl, fuck her, marry her a week later, 5 months down the road, they're getting divorced because, to them, marriage is just a fucking GAME!! "If I don't like her, I can divorce her!"
