Yes I do mean the physical cards aka the plastic card

They are already digital. If the data is stored on the chip, magnetstrip, or smartphone doesn't change that.

Compared to a checkbook where you fill out the piece of paper and hand it over as payment.

But i guess you will be able to order a card if you want to in the foreseeable future.
