What are good, mid price gifts to buy friends and extended relatives?

One friend is easy to please, as he requested home made food for his birthday gifts, in future, or a meal out. I considered things like $35 wine, $25 chocolates, a $40 dog poster, $25 pearls and semi precious jewellery.

Things at a Lovisa half price sale, $25 sun catchers, $45 wine glass sets and cute $25 mugs and Angel ornaments for $35. But after I’ve bought everyone those, what are other cheapish ideas?

Are gift cards a good solution?

If they read, books are great. Unless you are sure, don't buy durable goods for other adults. Food and wine are nice if you know what they like.

Yes some may say gift cards are unimaginative but I think they're a thoughtful alternative that allows the gift receiver to get what they actually like rather then the proverbial tie or socks or pullover sweater non of which they really ever want to wear.
