What are some reliable sites for online purchases?

I'm thinking of Amazon (with which I've had good experiences so far) for new stuff, and Ebay for second hand. What other sites would you recommend? Purchases would be for electronics, cameras and lenses, toys... I want the site to have a hassle-free online payment system with no security issues.

Thanks for a very informative answer. I have my doubts though with the positive customer reviews: how many of those are real, i. e. correspond to real buyers of the product listed, and how many are made up to boost a score? I don't think there's an easy way to find out.

You will find plenty of fake goods on amazon and ebay too.

So it's more important that you know what you're buying, rather than just assuming reliability.

Always use credit card online - not gift card, American Express, or debit card. You will have a better chance of getting your money back.

The only time I got into trouble was after using my debit card in a physical shop in London. It was a small purchase, but it was towards the end of our stay and I wanted to save some cash for airport expenses. Somehow, a week later my bank advised me there were 2 big online purchases, they obviously copied my card back and front while I was unaware of it. Luckily for me, the attempted purchases were for large amounts, so my bank sent me the warnings. No charges were made, but I had to go through the hassle of blocking my card and getting a new one.
