In the U.K., do they say lass as much as they say lad?

In the U.K., do they say lass as much as they say lad? I asked a fellow Gag user from the U.K., and he says he's the only one in the U.K. that uses either.

I say lass, but more in an ironic fashion, making fun of our Northern dialect, and how old fashioned it sounds. For example, my dad pronounces book as boowk, rather than buk, same with cook, and older people might say 'put wood in th'hall', which of course, means close the door...

It's definitely a Northern English, and possibly Scottish thing. And younger generations would probably be conscious they are saying it, sort of like no one would say 'golly' wholly seriously.

They both originated in the North, and are still used by northerners (especially old ones) to mean "boy" and "girl". However, "lad" also has a slightly different usage which is popular all over the country, and refers to a particular type of young working class man (eg. "lads' mags" are magazines which focus on football, cars and naked ladies). In that context, the female equivalent is not "Lass" but "Ladette". Similarly, it's also used by working class men (and especially football managers) to mean "male friends". eg. "going out on the town with the lads".

Lass is more of a scottish or geordie thing to say so its a northerners twang

Only like, nuts oldies say lass. Lad is used all the time. I don't know why 'lass' is... LASS popular. haww haww hawww

It's more of an Irish/Scottish thing to say lass, moreso Scottish. I say lad a lot and I'm Irish, lass I say rarely

depends where you are from. Northern people tend to say "lass" and "mam" etc. southerns don't say lass or lady really. It depends on what area.

I've never heard "lass" used before here, I thought that was more a scottish thing but "lad" is generally said a lot as is "mate"

I think lass is a more northern thing. I've never heard anyone from southern England say it ever. Lad is quite commonly used.

I don't really know anyone that says lass or lad. But they definitely say lad more than they say lass.
