What does it mean when you can't see someone's whatsapp status?

I can see a certain contacts status on whatsapp, but when I got my my friend to check their num on her phone she can't see their whatsapp status, why is that?

She did! I'm saying it says available on hers when I see it on my phone. But when my friend checks it, there's nothing there.
