So I'm curious what your opinions are for guys that shave in this vintage way

Nah, I like safety razors better. Straight just takes too much time and effort, plus they can kill you if you aren't careful. However, I have gotten a straight razor shave before and boy it was awesome!
My favorite razor is a Merkur 37C. It's aggressive enough to give a VERY close shave, but still gentle enough to not cause irritation because it slices through whiskers rather than tugging on them. Also, usually only one pass with the grain is enough, so it saves a lot of time, too.

My brother uses that model I think. I haven't tried it though. A straight shave is awesome! I used to break multi blade disposables and just used the tiny razor by itself till I discovered straight razors are still made. I hate those multi blade razors so much...
I would give the safety blade a chance if I hadn't already gotten used to the straight razor
My girlfriend is a professional makeup artist and esthetician, she likes it after she shaves me with the straight razor. I dont like it, something about a woman with a razor to your throat makes me nervous.
Hahaha its like: "everything the military has taught me, along with movies, pop culture, and videogames, says this is wrong."
I don't really care, but from what I understand they use 4 or 5 blades these days because it cuts the hair shorter and it doesn't grow back as thick. Thick stubble irritates my skin
I don't really think anything of it, haha. My fiance has been shaving with a straight razor for years.
Yeah I would notice for sure, especially if he switched to the cheap 5 blade razors or something. Even I don't use those things.
Yeah most of them are pretty bad. I use a single blade safety razor.
I don't concern myself with the shaving habits of others.

I shave with a straight razor. It's a good morning ritual... it has made me more confident in my appearance, my skin has looked healthier/smoother... the whole straight razor "market" has made me smell better too with the various aftershaves you don't find in Target or whatnot.
I have the Colonel Conk Santa Fe bowl, and the lid for Mitchell's Wool Fat fits on it perfectly. Anyway I soak a washcloth, wad it up in the bowl, put the lid on and put that in the microwave for a minute. Then I strop the razor while I wait. I made a mixture of almond oil, tea tree oil, jojoba oil and grape seed oil in a little soap pump, put that on my face and then the hot towel. I put the lid back on to preserve the heat so when I lather up my soap it is nice and hot.
That's frightening, but you are a pro. Sounds classy and old school.
Does it really reduce irritation? Is it s significant difference?
Actually I haven't used a safety razor. My money would be on the straight razor if I had to guess at it. Safety razor are supposed to be much better then a standard disposable or multi blade but I don't think they're quite as good as a straight. Probably much easier and quicker to use. I wouldn't trade mine though I actually love shaving now
I found a discussion on this site

Looks like the straight razor is largely preferred, and appears to be the best shave.
Well, you can get proficient with it after a few weeks. But its gonna take several months to a year to really master it I think. Depends on how often you shave really. You'll have to study your skin and techniques which can take a while. Honestly that's part of fun. Once you get it down and master it you'll probably feel very proud and confident.
Before I used my straight for the first time, I lathered cream onto an inflated balloon and practiced shaving the cream off of that. If it doesn't pop then you are applying the right amount of pressure (ideally none)
Good for you.
But I only let a trained barber do it. I don't trust myself to do it hahahah.
It feels great. Very close shave.
But I use a safety razor
I only have one comment. WHY?
