What's the real reason many Asians have slanted eyes?

Personally, I think those eyes are interesting. I wonder if at some point, people had the usual normal eyes and there was some new gene added?

I read somewhere long ago that it had to do with evolving in very cold and rugged climates where there was an evolutionary advantage to having a more narrow opening for the eyelids which helped to protect the eyes from debris flying in the wind as well as reflected sunlight in the ice and snow. That seemed like a reasonable hypothesis.

That was more for squinty eyes though rather than merely slanted. Like a lot of Japanese women actually have reasonably large eye openings in my opinion, though there's a different shape to it from Western eyes:

I'm not sure what causes that change in shape when the eyes aren't so squinty, but it might have to do with some mixing with those who had squinty eyes.

In general I think the kind of eyes the world tends to find "stereotypically Asian" are generally found more in more in areas like Mongolia, like Khulan Chuluun (Mongolian actress):

I find in places like Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea that you tend to find quite a variation to the shape of eyes, and that perhaps even the really slanted or squinty kind of eyes above are actually very rare to find, not necessarily the norm.

It's just how their eyes are. There are many different eyes shapes and the ones you call normal are actually also in different shapes.
But it's just how they're built just like your eyes are skin color is different from theirs.

It's some genetic DNA thing, nobody knows why. Their eyes aren't really slanted, they just have what's called an Epicanthic fold, which makes them look slanted.

Maybe it was a mutation. I personally think that as the ancestry of Asians diverged from the African continent that they probably stuck together because they would have been targeted by round eyed people and settled in the Asian continent, where the eyes became a status symbol and a useful method for otherizind round eyed people and preserving ethnic purity.

i imagine it stems from evolution perhaps to limit sun or be better resistance to wind or something like that... but i'd be careful saying "normal eyes" considering that 2/3 of the worlds population lives in asia

who says other eyes are 'normal'? i doubt a few million Asians for a start///other than that you may as well aske why some people have different colour skin... its just the different ways we evolved as we spread accros the planet... no mystery

I always thought the Chinese, Japanese and Korean eyes were cute. That's why it's a mystery to me.
When I said normal, I meant our non-slanted, usual eyes.
