Haha! The USA largely joined the conflict due to a concept known as "Containment" .. more or less the idea to "Contain" the spread of communism
In this case, there was a Civil War ongoing between North (Communist) and South (Anti-Communist) Vietnam.
From a military perspective the United States held supremacy, and won nearly every engagement (roughly 50,000 Americans, 200,000 South Vietnamese soldiers, and over 1,000,000 North Vietnamese/Viet Cong died).
The issue with the war was how the American public perceived it, and how unpopular it quickly became. The USA was already going through some major social/political changes (Civil Rights movement for example)... and there was a very large and powerful Anti-War movement...
It ended up influencing a lot of political change.
So the USA tried to find a way to withdrawal from the conflict, while also supplying South Vietnam the ability to defend itself (known as Vietnamization, more or less replacing Americans that were going home with fresh no South Vietnamese soldiers).
promising its ally (South Vietnam) it would continue to support it, and return if North Vietnam started the war again..
The USA slowly withdrew over a period of some years... and then eventually a peace accord was signed between all parties and the USA left completely.
The USA promised to continue funding and supporting South Vietnam, and to return if the North Vietnamese started the war up again
though the war ended for the USA
the war in Vietnam would not... and both sides would start to break the peace...
on top of this...
some choices were made in Congress (Case Church Amendment, Cutting of Funding to South Vietnam.. etc)
that more or less made it next to impossible for South Vietnam to defend itself
So within 2 years after the USA withdrew
South Vietnam... which was now dry of resources... little to no funding... and also low morale and a great deal of internal corruption... collapsed from Northern invasion.
It turned into a completely humiliating self made political disaster.
^ to make things worse, the aftermath of the conflict within the region also brought about
re education camps..
the boat people (south vietnamese fleeing the country.. many dying in the process)
extreme persecution
and outright genocide (especially in cambodia, where pol pot killed over a 25% of his population)
Arguably what could have been a military victory for the USA
turned into its great political disaster... that MOST people (including Americans) dont entirely understand..
and naturally a running joke in 2021 haha
