For those unaware, cryptids are animals unknown to exist but are the subject of folklore, myth and urban legend. They include legends like Bigfoot a. k. a sasquatch or samsquanch as well as other creatures like the Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabra, Thunderbird and the Yehteh.
Personally, I don't think any of these exist. Animals of this size are likely to have been discovered if they really exist. But this question is not about my opinion.
Almost every culture on earth has a story to tell about some sort of monstrous entity lurking in the shadows, the wood or the deep. Could any of these creatures actually be real?
Gigantic octopuses DO exist- they're just not big enough to rip sailing ships in half. Sea snakes DO exist, and it's not hard to imagine impressionable sailors thinking they're much bigger than they are, or that "that one's just a baby!". I've never heard of a "buru", but that looks a LOT like a crocodile with a lizard's head to me. Or perhaps just a Komodo dragon with the rear legs of an aquatic reptile. There was no doubt a time when the platypus would've been dismissed as a joke, and while I've seen and interacted with living giraffes, they STILL look like a joke.
You wander into the darkness, and eventually you smell something- you don't recognize it, but you know it to be animal, and you know it smells like something BIG. Then you hear movement- it's awake!- and you hear a deep, hoarse roar. Then you hear the noise of a rumbling charge and feel the very ground shake beneath you. You turn to run, but you don't know where to go, and you hear and feel it gaining on you. Then, with sudden violence, an impossibly strong and heavy weight slams into you, sending you sprawling. You desperately try to regain your feet, but you're not fast enough, and you feel a wrenching snap as a jaw wider than your torso with teeth longer than your head slams down onto your chest, snapping your ribs like matchsticks and severing your spine.
Does that sound like a monster? It sure does. But meet it in the daylight, and it's just a hippo. A regular animal, albeit an extremely dangerous one. Monsters dwell in the dark because it's only there that they can BE monsters. It's no different with the real animals behind these cryptids, assuming that there is one.
I feel like most of the water cryptics may possibly existe to this day. Most of the earth is covered in water around 85% or so and we homosapiens managed to explore approximately 5% of it. I recommend that you should check the U-28 incident where a German U-boat sank a British steamer and afterwards it exploded. During the explosion, the remains of the sunken British ship came out and along with a 60ft long crocodile like creature. It was witnessed by the commander and everyone on that ship. Who knows, it's possible.
Update. Apparently it's an extinct group of species called Mosasaur.
Science discovers thousands of new species a year but these are mostly very small ones. Recently they discovered a new species of whale but in cases like this it's because they didn't previously realise it was a separate species. The problem with things like Bigfoot is why has no one ever shot one or found a dna sample? All we ever get with cryptids are blurry long distant videos.
Sure. Except big foot. If he existed he would have been strapped to someones hood by now, stuffed and be a permanently addition to some stuffy, dusty bar. The notion is cool though.
Giant Octopus are on video, a lot, like a very common non criptid animal.
Oarfish, Sea Snakes and Anacondas are basically sea serpents.
Buru just looks like a badly drawn lizard or crododilian.
Chupacabras are the name for coyotes with mange.
Thunderbird is a Condor, or maybe the extinct Argentavis.
That thing on the bottom right is just a drawing of the extinct Pterosaur called Rhamphorhynchus.
And lastly, The lochness monster is just a depiction of a plesiosaur, but those lived like seals and sea lions, in large groups, and they breathed air so you would sea them on the beach of any water they lived in in droves, plus they are extinct.
I don't believe in stuff. I base stuff on facts and so far there is no facts for such things therefore no they don't exist until proven otherwise which in theory won't happen unless if it's a sea monster way way down below because the rest of the stuff should be easy to find. And to explain were such creatures came from it's called imagination of concepts that already existed. Not hard to think of a made up animal like Buru when Komodo dragons exist. Or unicorns when horses exist.
Not all of them… big foot sighting exist in way too many places in North America going back hundreds of years for it to be just folklore. Most people who really read into the historical evidence come to the conclusion that it is possible. The wilderness in North America is so vast there is so much we don’t know about. There is evidence of the chupacabra and Loch Ness creature as well.
I do have a hard time with some of the stranger more supernatural ones though.
We only have fossil evidence for a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the life that existed on earth so many things are possible. But until there's evidence they are myths.
