Is it just Norwegian ships that have bar codes?

I was down the docks today watching the boats come and go. This Norwegian ship came in and I noticed it had a big bar code on the side. As usual with docks there was a few old guys hanging around and one told me when he worked in norway it was his job to point a barcode scanner out to sea to "scan da navy in"

Is norway the only place that does this?

I live in Sweden and i have seen cargo ships that has the same code. I think it's an international code that all ships in general has it for authority identification. I can be wrong.
