What color do you think the human eye recognizes the first?

Someone said it was yellow and thats why schoolbuses are yellow and someone else said its red and thats why stop signs are red.

When I say first color, I mean the color our eyes are drawn to first in terms of alarm.

It's green and that's scientifically shown because the human eye has the highest sensitivity to green which is right in the middle of the visible spectrum.
Yellow is a close second though.
Red is not.

Stop signs and other red signs are red usually because red is the color of oxygenated blood and thus red signals danger and often royalty (as in "blood lines").
Think of:
The Red Cross or any first-aid red cross.
The Red Crescent
Fire hydrants and fire trucks are usually red but often yellow too. Fire trucks may also be white.
Fire alarms are red.
Red is the color of communism because it was chosen to represent the blood of the workers who died in the struggle against capitalism.
Stop signs - because if you go through one, it is dangerous and you may get killed.
Do Not Enter signs are white and red for the same reason.


All schoolbuses are painted the color "National School Bus Glossy Yellow".
No other vehicles are permitted to be in that color. This makes school buses distinct compared to any other vehicle on the road.

“The yellow is not pure spectral yellow,” says Ivan Schwab, clinical spokesperson at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The best way to describe [the color] would be in wavelength,” says Schwab. The wavelength of the popular school-bus color is “right smack in the middle” of the peak wavelengths that stimulate the photoreceptor cells our eyes use to perceive red and green. The red and green photoreceptor cells, or “cones” as they are commonly known, are the two most predominant cones in our eyes. Schwab says, “If you get a pure wavelength of one color…and you hit just one cone with it, you’re going to have x amount of transmission of signal to the brain. But if that [wavelength] were to stimulate two cones, you’ll get double the amount of transmission to the brain.” Remarkably, “That color that we are calling school bus yellow hits both peaks equally.” So although they may not have fully comprehended the science behind it, the color Cyr and his colleagues chose at the 1939 conference makes it hard for other drivers to miss a school bus, even in their peripheral vision. “And it’s darned big,” Schwab adds.

The human eye is most responsive toward the lemon yellow green you see on many firetrucks today - for that very reason. First responders wear reflective coatings with that color specifically to be seen because that color spectrum stands out to our eyes.

Given your choices, our eyes would catch the yellow before they respond to red.

uh it depends on the background mainly, i think that yellow stands out more on a dark background since red is a dark color, but if it's a lighter background then red would stand out more.

The first thing the human eye sees is movement, then silhouette, and only THEN color (this is why it's so easy to hide from someone on the opposite side of a fire; the eye adjusts and stops paying attention). Anyway, the eye most quickly detects red and most easily perceives gray.

It is yellow. Fire engines are red but it has been shown that it wold be better if they were yellow. I think some places starting making them yellow but I think the tradition is just to ingrained in firefighter culture.
