If it will cost 200 dollars to recycle an old TV, what will happen to old TVs? ?

I heard on the news this morning that Best Buy will come to your house and pick up any old piece of electronic equipment you want to dispose of. I have 3 old TV sets and one is a big 32" one. It sounded like a good plan until they said they charge 200 dollars per item.

People will pay the money to recycle them

People will store them in their attics

They will be found on the side of the road.

They will be taken apart and put in the regular trash

In my area, a few of the local high schools have days where they accept recycled goods (including TVs) for a modest $20 fee... for whatever you can fit in your car. The High School then sells the goods to recyclers and uses the money for extra-curricular activities like music, band and chess club. (Sports have their own school-provided funding)

If that doesn't exist in your area, then I think many would disassemble the TV and put it in the regular trash. I've done that myself (several years ago) with some old CRT-based TVs.

Every year the transfer station used to get a recycler to come on a specific day and they would except all kinds of electronics for free. This has not been done in a while probably because of the virus. have been waiting for it.

In the European Union, manufacturers/dealers have to take back old electronics free of charge. That's the way to go for serious recycling.

Sadly out west here, the desert is full of old electronics people take out and use for target practice.

No one is going to pay to recycle that kind of stuff, they'll likely just sneak it in with the regular trash to be hauled away.

Of course as you know, in Rural America there is no trash pickup so people often just burn their trash, perfectly legal too.

Same as when they started to charge a fee for kitchen appliances. They will get dumped on some side road. I never did it but I came across many of them i my travels.

It shouldn't happen. Your council is supposed to provide waste recycling centres. However, people do still fly tip and dump stuff in the canal etc.

@CaptainSmartass I think I pay enough taxes so that recycling should be included for all residents. They are just encouraging people to discard this equipment by the roadside and after it gets rained on the lead and other heavy metals get leached into the ground water.

They will extract any gold in the items and then send them to a dump. $200 per item is ridiculous though. I myself would take them apart and slowly dispose of the parts in your regular trash. It might take you a bit of time but it saves you money. Or, you could get someone off Craigs List to haul the stuff away for you at a much lower price.

people will be desperate and if not on the side of the road, they will be sitting by the clothing drop off boxes. if they work you can try giving them/donating to a thrift store something like that.

$200? We have electronic recycling days. One is coming up. Usually once or twice a year in a Home Depot parking lot. Always free. We pay the small recycling fee at purchase.

Why not just keep it? Video cassette tapes still look better when shown on old TVs than they do when shown on new TVs.

I threw out all the VHS tapes I had. I still have a working VCR however. You never know when you might need it.
