Every day, but it wasn't always that way...

When I was a kid, my bedroom was always a mess: my bed was never made, my clothes were never put away, junk was set on the floor and left there (making it impossible to vacuum), papers and books were scattered all over the room (despite my having a small bookcase and a desk) and there was general disorder everywhere you looked.

As an adult, I make my bed first thing every morning, the entire house is vacuumed and dusted once a week, clean clothing is put away promptly, and everything has a place... and it is in its place.

@rosabelle65 Good answer and I say you are correct in terms of a basic answer. I should have specified I was talking about personal rooms and not the whole house.
First I will list a few characteristics of a clean room before revealing the key.
- Smells good (air)
- Lack of excessive dirt, dust, musk
- Lack of Trash
- Lack of excessive dirty linen

Okay Now I Will Reveal The Key...
You started to touch on it when you said "neat" but let's be MORE definite and get straight to the definition.
🔑The key to having a clean room is having overtly assigned places for EVERYTHING. 🗝
And to clean daily in small amounts. Order can always be improved upon and the more orderly your room the more easy it will be to clean and keep clean.

So get more overtly assigned places and clean daily. It requires not much effort at all to clean daily. There are studies that show having a clean, orderly place reduces stress levels. When you have overly assigned places one doesn't have to think about where to put so and so. It can be cleaned fast in terms of things being out of place. And if you break it down you will see that no 1 element is a giant on its own. Cleaning of linen is small alone. Putting things away is small on its own if you have assigned places. Cleaning filth alone is the toughest but yet still no giant alone. Just keep breaking it down in your head and it makes everything in life easier. That is the secret. 🤫

Whenever I am fortunate enough to have my own room I give it a through cleaning every week or every other week if I am really pressed for time. I keep things clean enough that needing to clean constantly is not necessary.
