Would you like to become rich (at least a millionaire) if so why, why not?

- Being a millionaire here wouldn't get me a lavish lifestyle. It would be like an upper middle class lifestyle that would run out in a decade.
I mean, a house here that is fairly big, say a 5 bedroom family home, but nothing special would cost about £600000
A new BMW or mercedes depending on the spec might cost £50000
The remainder would run out fairly quickly with somewhat modest living and the odd treat here and there.
Overall, I'm not too fussed about money. I just want a reasonable lifestyle, not to be enslaved to my boss, and my own half decent home (detached, suburban or country, nice area, away from people or busy excesses of city life/pollution).Is this still revelant?

- It’s not a bad place to be and a broad knowledge base is required. Living through this website is not going to help with that. The fun of it is using your monies in a way that glorifies God…which means following tax code and staying on top of things. It can become a chore. I have a couple 10 million in Assets and salary totaled friends who pay me to keep a portion their money influential, replacing itself, and out the hands of Biden/Governments.
-I’m always in red salary (poverty level) and owe but asset comfortable. Is this still revelant?

- there's that old saying money can't buy you happiness... Well duh because happiness is a state of mind not an object however money can pay your bills which will bring you peace of mind and therefore Happiness 😊! Thats all I would really want. Enough to have my basics bills covered including any medical, a modest home and one vacation a year of two weeks long.Is this still revelant?
- Nah, I don't need to be rich. I would just like to live comfortablly and be able to afford the things I need like a safe place to live, have reliable transportion, health care, money for food and fuel. I also want to be able to afford nice things, like electronics or to take a vacation somewhere but I don't need anything extravagant. Is this still revelant?

526- Literally all my problems will be solved with more money. My life is really great, tbh, but there's a lot of stress and sacrifice I endure daily to make it work.
Having extra money would reduce that stress, make it easier to handle the unexpected, and allow me to actually progress making my house and home.ReactLike

- I don't want to be "Rich", I want to be "Wealthy". There is a pretty significant difference between the two and while I'm working towards a nice retirement, I would not consider the amount to be wealthy by any stretch. (Although it will be past 1 million, if the 401k investments play out as anticipated.)React

- I like the idea of having a lot of money for the security it brings, but I don't need things that cost a lot of money.
A very wealthy man once told me, "the most fun you will ever have with money is giving it away", and I believe him.ReactLike

- One million is definitely not rich in my opinion. Rich to me is you have enough to buy whatever you want without having to even think twice.
Is it enough to survive on solely, maybeReactLike

Not in $ in the US. My parents were never millionaires yet they were in the 1%, still are even though they're both retired
- Show All Show Less
@Twalli okay let me simplify the question… what criteria do you use to define the 1%?
1% richest Americans. If you live in the US, you should remember the Occupy Wall Street protests. They were the 99%, we were the 1%. We were the 99% of the 1%, but still the 1%. The 1% of the 1% are those that have more money than lottery winners.
@Twalli and how is that 1% defined? Because SmartAsset found that to break into the top 1% of earners, an average American family needs to make over $597,815 yearly… so you’re telling me that your parents were bringing in nearly 600K a year, and their assets never added up to more than a million?
They put a lot into retirement and the tuition costs for highschool for my sister and me were over 24k each. Then there was a bit over 1k each for books each year. About $400 for groceries each month. Then utilities and insurance took a hefty sum. My dad's midlife crisis didn't help. They made more than they don't, but not a significant amount.
@Twalli and I am willing to bet that if you added up all the assets that it would be more than a million.
Over time they made well over $1 million, but the expenses kept their discretionary income (with retirement, investments, etc.) below $1 million. So if they pooled everything and cashed in their stocks, they'd have more, but they didn't so the money they could use never reached that amount.
If they cashed in everything and drained their retirement and tusts (which I don't think they can as they can't access them,). Yes, they would be.
@Twalli well they already own it, their assets and their worth belong to them. That’s how a persons wealth is determined. When that talk about how much Jeff Bezos is worth they are talking about his assets… not just liquid cash..
Yes, but that money isn't immediately available, plus a trust is locked if you're not vhf the trustee, they aren't. I am, but it opens on their death, all they can do with it is put $ in.
@Twalli … okay that’s the point. A person's wealth is determined by the value of all the assets of worth owned…. If you own a million dollars worth of assets, that would make you a millionaire
I think being a millionaire should be based on liquid assets. Most millionaires like Bezos have well over a million in liquid assets
@Twalli Bezos is a billionaire... but that isn't how a person's wealth is determined. The Grand majority of millionaires aren't going to just a million dollars in cash sitting in the bank. You don't become a millionaire by letting your money and just sit gathering dust.
My aunt and uncle have over a million in liquid assets. A good deal more in retirement and investments, maybe in trusts to their kids too, I don't know. To me a millionaire can draw on that much without cashing in on investments or opening up locked accounts (retirement, trusts, etc.)
- I'd like to be comfortable for the rest of my life and be able to still look forward to things. Something the super rich don't get.React
