What kind of unknown creatures do you think lurks in the deep depths of the oceans?

Only insignificant ones and not the monstrosities that we like to imagine in our fantasies. I think I can give an in depth opinion on this so please read on and then let me know what you think too.

Okay, so we can’t expect a reptilian creature to be living there because then it would have to resurface for oxygen so something like a mosasaur definitely can’t be down in those depths because they had to come up for oxygen.

The only vertebrates that can live down there can be fish because they are the ones that can breathe underwater.

Next, we can’t expect a gigantic 50 foot fish to be living there because the prey base down there seems too limited to allow a huge predator to sustain itself. The only way it’s possible for a giant animal to be there is if it has some mechanism to have extremely slow metabolism or something.

Next, we can’t expect a now extinct animal to still be alive down there because the animals which used to live near the top can’t suddenly start living in the bottom without necessary adaptations over millions of years and if the adaptation has occured then that animal is essentially a different animal now so no extinct animals still living down there.

How about Megalodons still living down there? You already know the answer.

However, with all this being said, your curiosity about marine life is still very valid because we know very little about marine animals. We may have never seen a full grown collosal squid to this day. There may indeed be some extremely gigantic animals that we haven’t discovered yet and some animals which are known yet unknown.

The Orcas (Killer Whales) which live near Australia and New Zealand are actually quite friendly to humans and the family of Orcas have even been known to slow down to allow humans to keep up with them as humans can’t swim as fast as them.

However, the Orcas in the North Atlantic have been known to attack boats (not known if they were being aggressive or just playful) but they may consider humans as enemy in their culture (yes, they have a culture because they’re extremely intelligent)

While the Orcas in the Indian Ocean are almost completely unknown. No one knows how they would react to humans, maybe they could rip a human apart if they get the chance or maybe they would be friendly too or maybe their culture just doesn’t talk about humans in detail.

The thing is, those animals are extremely intelligent and they learn things from their ancestors and pass down knowledge to next generations and even have complex language. They may even have multiple ‘religions’.

There’s a lot more interesting stuff in the oceans.

Oh there are so many!! I absolutely love the ocean depths and learning/studying all about it, but there has been some new species discoveries that the MBARI have found. My favorite deep sea creatures is the salmon snail fish and the barreleye. The salmon snail fish uses these specialized fins to detect prey while the barreleye has eyes within its body that mostly looks upwards and tracks any prey that swims by.

Don't tell anyone but I spotted a rare crustacean along the pacific that I remember from my home planet Rygars4. I was banished here as punishment for a tiny interstellar (It was only like 6 planets and most of them weren't even populated) accident. It's most likely that creature was sent to monitor my actions.

The loch ness monster is usually depicted as a species of plesiosaur.

Plesiosaurs are all extinct, we know this because they are air breathing reptiles that acted a lot like seals/sea lions. So if they still existed, you would see hundreds or thousands basking on ocean beaches, not 1 or 2 hidden deep under a lake. They weren't deep sea animals, they were shoreline animals that ate things in the shallows.

@exitseven I saw a program that focused on the fish that live at the very bottom of the ocean. They were so ugly and scarry to the point that I wished I hadn't watched it. They weren't huge or anything, just so very creepy to observe.
