Should the authorities get involved?

My mother purchased me a car off of Facebook martketplace a month ago, she got the car and I got to test drive it but something seemed off with the car when driving so we called the seller and he said he’d come pick the car up and take it to the mechanic himself. He eventually comes and takes it to the mechanic as he said and tells us there was that the mechanic said there was an issue with 1 sensor being off. Weeks have passed and he still has the car and calls sometimes telling my mom about how the transmission isn’t good and he’s paying out of pocket for a new one so I’ll have the car soon but it’s been weeks now, and I’m worried it’ll never get it back. She had registered it and titled it, and everything. But I’m not sure if he’s being genuine, and my mom still believes he’ll come around whenever he says he will

Parts take time I use to work along side a grease monkey pair husband and wife we'd repair cars on the fly if we had parts for them. We had to wait for a year to get a proper replacement custom tailpipes. We are in a part shortage either the part is gettin scarpped from a part yard or ripped off a totaled car. Bear with the time deficit, a lot of car repair places can only repair a malfunctioning part if they got a replacement if its a complex part like a transmission. Its not as simple as a modern desktop PC where its like expensive legos.

It’s surprising that he’s taken responsibility and seems to be repairing the car on his own dime, but at the same time, you are right to be suspicious. I would try to find out who is working on the car and see if you can get some timely updates. I would avoid making accusations for now, especially since he appears to be helping.

If you are in possession of the title and its in her name then you legally own it and can report it as stolen. As far the repairs and all of that go if it is in writing he might be legally obligated to fulfill his claims.

Get the name of the mechanic and go to the shop and ask about it. It isn't out of the ordinary for it to take awhile to get parts in; but it doesn't hurt to double check with the shop to assauge your concerns.
