I'm tempted to say cuttlefish, because their camouflage abilities (WAY beyond those silly chameleons, who are basically just mood lizards) are second to none (save perhaps to something we haven't found yet, since it's so good at camouflaging itself), but I just can't say no to an octopus. The freakish intelligence, the demonstration of embodied cognition (sort of), the fact that they can be taught to pick locks (because THAT is a skill you often need in the ocean- what, are you going to create an army to salvage sunken pirate ships? Wait, that would be awesome), the huge array of odd abilities, the fact that they can kill sharks, and the way that they seem to have basically no instinct; it's ALL learned behavior... what's not to like/be terrified of? Seriously, if they didn't die after mating, we'd probably have had a whole epoch of history of people encountering them exploring the land in water-filled exosuits (which would also be awesome).

Hawaiian creation myth holds that this universe is just the latest in a long chain, and each universe is built from the ruins of the last one. But during the last cycle, one creature figured out what was happening and managed to escape into THIS universe. That creature was the octopus.

An octopus can do the same thing and are highly intelligent. Of course anything that is intelligent we have to kill and eat for dinner.

My favourite octopus is Squidward Tentacles. Although quite pessimistic, he is definitely more mature than SpongeBob Squarepants and Patrick Starr put together.
