Definitely The V6. A v8 with a 4.0 displacement is a rather small typical v8, where as a v6 with a 4.0 displacement is a bigger typical v6. Considering a v8 has more mass to rotate and is slightly heavier than a v6, the v6 would probably yield more usable power.

they both have the same CID but the V8 is bigger because there are more cylinders and all the other hardware to support them.

Theyre both the same displacement, the V6 would more likely have a bigger bore and /or a bigger stroke. 9 times of 10 the V8 will have better torque and horsepower

Neither. The liters is the total capacity/volume of all the cylinders. So in the example you gave, the same volume is coming from two different numbers of cylinders.
