What is the purpose of freezing accounts that aren't trolls or troublesome?

There is no reason for a moderator to freeze an account unless there was a violation to the TOS. If someone was frozen, there is likely a reason behind it. The only moderators that can temporarily freeze an account are Uber Moderators. Super and Moderators cannot do that.

Now, admins do regularly check our actions. If they believe the account was frozen unjustly or for no reason, they will unfreeze the account. If they believe that the moderator was correct, it stays frozen for three days.

I have not frozen an account for no reason. It is always those notorious trolls that we get here. Those are the ones that I focus on. Sometimes, they can have up to 10 accounts in a day that I have personally experienced.

I tend to err on the side of caution with freezes. I often will just message admins and ask them to look into an account if I am unsure. Better to not freeze unless absolutely necessary. Look at it as a last resort action. That is how I view it.

I'm asking because I believe @LemiaOfThunder was unfairly frozen. He wasn't doing anything wrony yet his account was frozen.

I did see (and receive a message from him) that he was frozen. I have no clue why. As far as I could see, there was nothing that he did wrong. Now, I don't know if another mod noticed something I did not or the admins froze the account.

If the admins did it, I will never know as they do not share that information with us. I personally have never seen him causing any issues on the site at all. We are not on the same times that often but do overlap a little bit. He has always been polite and nice to me and other users that I can tell.

Somehow, I recall seeing the commotion yesterday about this user and his allegedly frozen account. I start to wonder why there suddenly is so much interest in this user.

@SueShe I have relatively little interaction with the user in question. My experience has been positive, but I do not know if I could have missed something as I tend to do at times.

I've known him since I was little and never known him to be nasty. From he told me he was doing his daily opinions and went to do the MHO to his question and said he account was frozen by admin for having multiple accounts, I've only seen him use on account. My only thought the person that had a problem with him got bunch of users to mass report his account and the admin froze it.

This mass reporting "trick" is not just effecting him. There are a number of users that are experiencing problems. Let me tag admin so they are aware if it is a case of trolls causing issues.

The purpose is to try to keep this site as pristine as possible. There are not only trolls but also a lot of spammers.

Other reasons why accounts are being frozen would include all those topics that you can find under the FAQs, under the tab "Moderators" and under the topic title "What to report, what to hide? What are the posting guidelines?".

You will find a plethora of reasons why moderators and/or administrators hide or freeze questions and accounts.

Please bear in mind that moderators do not have the authority to freeze any account or questions but we merely hide them from the list of questions until the administrators review the reasons. Either they are permanently frozen by the administrators only or if the administrators had the feeling that there was no reasonable justification to hide a question/answer/user, they will reinstate it after 24-48 hours.

Violating rules too much, being a known troll or spammer, a duplicate or second account or if you did something egregious like posting nudes or threats.
