A good cattle dog will rise on the run onto it's back paws to get a better look. Often the grass is taller than the dog. In general dogs don't have good vision and like to get up higher to see better if they can. They have good smell and hearing instead. Besides the farmer is his directing his dog, don't forget, with hand gesture and voice.

We over rate animals vision.

Despite cats being reputed to see in the dark, they don't. My tabby, at least, imagines things in the dark instead. A leaf moving at night is a mouse to him. Last night he thought he had caught a small creature but no he caught some dried up leaves. He still caught and let go as if it was a mouse. Silly little buggar.
