Trending & News I know I am... but very few do, I don't tell most. I was homeless once for about a month in Madison, Wisconsin, visiting for a financial reason. I had all my tennis gear at the shelter with me, I NEVER let it out of my sight. This 1 wannabe gangsta type young guy comes up all smirking and is "Pssh, I bet $100 I could beat you"... as I was just hitting a few basic strokes against the side alley wall. Nothing fancy, not enough space. Just using up time till we got in. I just raised my eyes nodded and went "Oh, hmm, good." A few days later I came walking back to the shelter with another guy and the same guy comes up to me all sheepishly and says ,"Hey dawg, I was just messing you with you, I didn't mean that the other day." I just said ok, that's fine. The guy I was walking with says, "He saw you today, he was at the park, that's why he said that." I'd spent the day on the courts down by the lake. What he didn't know was... I was a national juniors player. I've played in tournaments in France, CA and Portland. The INSTANT he made the big man bet, bragging, I KNEW not only was he not any good... he couldn't play AT ALL. The tennis fraternity is VERY DIFFERENT from other sports. You share the same locker room with your opponent. Tennis players DONT do that to one another. Some of my associates are VERY well off in the industry... in one case, a former world #4... Wimbledon runner up. They're not my friends to ask for money. We're not like that. My life's problems are my own. Tennis is a unique bond that way. We love the sport and support each other.
It depends a lot on your definition of "good". Things I'm good at: math, programming, kissing (so I've been told), driving (100 hours hot-lapping on track), skiing (mostly just crushing the groomers), listening.
