Why do people on reddit downvote so much?

You don't have to say something offensive or controversial, you can ask the most innocent /normal questions ever and you still get downvotes. I had asked a question about philosophy (what did "Aristotle mean by this quote on a sub called No Stupid Questions) and I got downvoted to oblivion. This is what I can't stand about the site. The negativity
