Why do people say ''It's not what it looks like'' when caught red-handed?

I've heard that phrase too much. ''It's not what it looks like.''

You've literally caught them doing something wrong (bullying, cheating, stealing, etc) with your own eyes and they used that line. Why?

Common sense. If there's a 1% chance you can get them to believe you you take that 1% chance what have you got to lose? And guys KNOW how once a woman is bonded to them that she won't want to end that bond. This is also why guys relax once he knows he's got a woman. Eddie Murphy illustrates this in this comedy bit from 1:45 on. 😆
