Depends on what you consider under "better".

Dogs definitely make better companions as they will not betray you like cats tend to do. Dogs are faithful while cats are capricious and will turn against you eventually if the opportunity arises.

If I had to chose to have a pet, then it would be a dog but I don't want to have any pet. I had my puppy dog as a child and when she died, I was so heartbroken that I decided that I would never let myself be in such an emotional state when losing a pet that I considered to be part of the family.

This is only a stereotype view, and of course there will be exceptions to it, but:-

I prefer dogs because they get very attached and rely on us. Cats however need nobody, and have no problems letting us know it!

I'm one of those crazy people who likes both cats and dogs. I love that my dog rins ip to me when I get home and is excited to see me, and I love that my cat loves to cuddle with me when I sit down and watch some tv.
