What does the word "rogue" mean?

Does the term bear a pejorative, negative connotation, or can it be used as a synonym for a rebel, or someone, who goes against the system, as well? Most dictionaries have a lot of definitions for the word, but which one is the most commonly used?

It's a character wearing a light armor, could be leather based. Wielding a dagger, dual-wielding possible. I'd think about a significant bonus in dexterity as well. Oh and certainly a talent for lock picking. The cape itself might be optional, but the hood might me important !

It's not a common word. I almost never hear anyone use it. So it's not easy to say what is most common when I rarely hear it.

A rogue could be a rebel, an outcast, a deviant, etc.

If the person who said it is a gamer, it might be more closely related to a thief. Rogue/thief is a character class in a lot of games.

Historically it meant an aggressive beggar but today its just another word for a criminal or someone involved in dodgy stuff. It's commonly used to describe someone you know lives a criminal lifestyle but you don't want to specify the exact crimes.

I'd say that it's typically synonymous with scoundrel or rascal. Or someone who is a rebel and goes against the system.

Or it could be a person or entity that flouts accepted norms of behavior or strikes out on an independent and possibly destructive path, as in "Gone rogue."
