Have you ever seen a real Onion Johnny?

If you ask someone from the UK to draw a stereotypical French man, there's a good chance they'll draw something like the people in the photos. This often confuses French people like #Julie4.

Back in the day it was easier and more profitable for onion farmers to take their onions to the UK than to Paris. Since the Breton language is similar to Welsh many of them found it easier to trade in Wales.
These onion sellers became known as Sioni winwns or Sioni nionod, or Onion Johnny's. The name spread across the UK and Brittany.

The war and various trading directives afterwards ended most of the Onion Johnny's but a few kept going until recently, covid was the final nail in the coffin.
