That is definitely rude, regarding in what epoch you live. Does not matter whether it is the 17th. century or today.

Nobody wants to see rotten teeth, cavities, the epiglottis or the uvula. Worse, nobody wants to smell the bad breath emanating from that open mouth.

Asians would never yawn without putting their hand in front of their mouth and why?

Because they know that it is unappealing and unappetizing to see a wide open mouth. If you go to Japan or Korea, people will even put a hand in front of their mouth when they laugh.

That is called good education and respect of and for the others.

My take is it doesn't bother me to see an uncovered yawn, it usually makes me belt one out. I do cover usually but sometimes I'm unable to and I don't worry about it then either.

I think the rudeness depends on the situation... you probably don't want to be yawning openly at a loved one's eulogy for example. Unless they were a hated one!
It's a rule in etiquette more than anything.
