How many people buy stocks?

Do you mean ACTIVELY buy stocks? Or just in the market? Because about half of Americans have 401k's. But only about 13% actively trade stocks.

Myself? I've been in a 401k since I was 25. But I didn't start ACTIVELY investing in stock till a little over 3 years ago. Which was a good time to get in because the market was down about 22% at the time. I learned a lot from it. Mostly that I'm not a good trader.😂 But, as I said it was a good time to get in. Even a doof like me was going to make money investing in your avg. stock.

I agree with Warren Buffet's take. If you don't understand what you're doing just put your money in an index fund with a low expense ratio like VOO. You won't break any records. But for the longterm you should see a 10 to 12 percent annual return. Which over a long timeline can amount to a lot.

I have most of my money in equities. A lot of it was given as compensation in lieu of cash.

I was in high school. My father had a pretty diverse stock portfolio and he showed me how he picked stocks and I had a few hundred dollars to invest. I remember the first stock I bought. It was an energy stock called Valero. It made money for me and the company is still around over 30 years later.
