How do you react when you stare into the abyss and the abyss stares back?

The abyss is nothingness and since nothing can't hurt you the real danger comes from behind while you're busy staring into it.

I theorise people feel more relaxed near the sea because there's no one for miles and miles in that direction who can hurt you.
