What does it mean "You're a character?"

I was talking to a new friend recently and I thought the conversation was going well. Then he said 'you're a character' and chuckled.

i've been told I'm animated because I sometimes use my hands and random sounds I come up with to explain a certain feeling or situation.

I feel like it's good, just not entirely sure what it means. Does it mean unique?

Most people would consider it a compliment. It means you have strong characteristics that stand out. Maybe a little crazy in a good way. Probably funny and fun to be around. Kind of the opposite of a boring subdued person. Someone who doesn't take life too seriously (but can when they need to).
