Why do girls lower their shirt to cover their lower back in front of guys for no reason?

That was the best way I think I could've formed that question lol. But here are more details.

You know when a girl pulls down the lower back part of her shirt to make sure it's not revealing any skin (or at least I assume that's the reason why)? I get that in general. But why do girls do that RIGHT IN FRONT OF A GUY? Wouldn't that just bring MORE attention to their lower back area? If they think a guy hasn't already caught a glimpse of their lower back skin when it's revealed, what makes them think the guy would AFTER it's covered? Seems almost like reverse reasoning...

Also, they do it sometimes when they don't even have to. Their lower back is already covered and they still pull their shirt lower or pants up higher. Again, in general, I get it, but why do it right in front of a guy as if it's some sort of retroactive preventative measure?

This is just something I've been curious about for no reason really. Just happened to me a min ago when I ran into a neighbor (who's always been friendly in the past) walking down the stairs and she did this same thing and didn't even have to! Her lower back was perfectly already covered.

It doesn't necessarily bother me, but it definitely piques my curiosity. Is it out of cynicism towards men? Self-consciousness? Both?

Now that I you mention this, I do that sometimes in school when sitting in class, but I def don't obsess over it. Most of my shirts and sweaters will show just an a tiny line of skin, so sometimes I don't even bother checking unless I can really feel a draft. Like today for instance I was wearing a shorter fitting sweater and could def feel some my back showing while sitting, but I couldn't really cover it up since it was short sweater, and it wasn't really a lot of skin showing, maybe like an inch or 2. As long as my under straps stay inside my jeans, I'm good! That is something I always check when I know my back is showing, I periodically just feel around my waistline to make sure I'm not showing any straps.

The only time a really keep yanking a shirt down to cover my back showing is with my cheerleading uniform, which is like a tight sleeveless vest tank top and skirt. The top honestly barely comes down over my the top of my skirt waistline. So when we are sitting in the stands cheering with fans and parents directly behind us I will pull it back down every few minutes just cause people are always brushing up against you with their feet and knees in the bleacher behind us. But yeah I'm fine with it showing a little but when it gets to be like half my back it gets a little cold!

I'd say girls that do what you were asking about feel a bit apprehensive about revealing something on their body, even an area that is normally visible a lot daily on most girls, even with modest clothes on. I don't think it has too much to do with who they are trying to cover up in front of. In a normal setting girls don't flip a switch and say "oh he's good looking, I'll show him some skin." That does happen in certain situations but not in mundane settings like school or church or walking by someone. Unless the girl happens to be really really flirty at the drop of a hat anyway.

Now I'm gonna think about this everytime my back shows and become a nut about it...hehe

LOL When I do it it's just 'cause I can feel my lower back is exposed. It doesn't matter whether a guy or girl is standing behind me. Yes, sometimes I think that my shirt is riding up in the back so I just tug on the back to check and make sure it's still properly covering my back.

I doubt it's anything about you or about men. It could be that they just want to look proper when in front of males, and not look like they're showing skin to draw men towards them. For example, whenever guys come over to our house (be they repairmen, family friends, etc.), my mom tells me to put on a bra and, if I'm wearing a night gown/dress, she tells me to put on shorts.

I think it comes from society's pressure on both women and men to look decent when faced with their gender counterparts.

I can't answer for everyone, but since pants have gotten lower-rise, the need to make sure my ass crack isn't hanging out all to be damned has risen. And if I'm getting down to the bottowm of my drawer-drawer, then I migth be wearing panties that don't fit inside my friggin pants right. Then I have the top of my underwear hanging out of the top of my pants waving in the wind like a flag.The only solution (besides doing laundry, and frankly- f*** that) is to yank the back of my shirt down in the back all the time. It's now like a tic, I do it all the time without even thinking about it. Even when it's probably squared away back there, CHRIST, WHAT IF IT'S NOT? Better yank that sucker down anyway, just to be sure.

It's the only way.

I suppose I could understand that, I wouldn't want my buttcrack showing either. ...Except my buttcrack is hairy and I know no one wants to see it, even girls who've loved me. A girl's buttcrack is so smooth and silky and there should be no shame in showing it!

i do this all the time and its subconscious I don't care if girls or guys are around me I don't even think twice about it

I think it's an automatic reflex. I would say everyday I probably have some of my back showing sitting in school but I only really "feel" it if my shirt is shorter or if it's really cold and there is a draft, or if I lean back against something like the chair or the seat in the car. I don't get all weird about anyone seeing skin. It isn't uncomfortable or anything, at least for me. Some girls you def see check every few minutes. and yeah it then seems like they freak out!
