What does a guy mean when he calls you his lady?

He had been calling me his girlfriend. Then he decided to call me his "lady". Made it sound like it was more than girlfriend, but I wonder if it is a step up or a step down.

It's just another affectionate form of describing your relationship. My fiance calls me 'his woman' when talking to friends on the phone or whatever. I think it doesn't necessarily mean a step anywhere, but if I had to choose one or the other, I'd say it's a step up. "His lady" or "his woman" are more possessive sounding that girlfriend. It's a good thing :)

Thanks! We were engaged 38 years ago, then he backed out. We started talking 4 months ago, but haven't seen each yet as we live 300 miles apart. He spends time on the phone with me, but is not in any rush to get together - says we have plenty of time. Not sure what to think.

Not at that age yet, but I would assume it's a step up. It means that you're not some girl, but a mature woman that he's with. To call you a lady may also imply that you're someone with class.
