They think a little shard of compressed carbon will secure the devotion of women far out of their reach—perhaps plotting to send a ring to some girl with deep green eyes all the way over in Russia, trying to woo her with cheap flowers and the promise of a financed apartment. They think they are buying love, but they are just trying to purchase a captive.

I do not wear jewelry. My hands are too busy digging graves for stillborn calves and hauling heavy buckets of lye. But sometimes, when I see a picture of these precious, multi-thousand-dollar stones flashing across a screen, I just stare at the center of the gem. I think about the absolute, suffocating pressure of the earth, and the diamond simply remembers what it used to be. The flawless facets turn violently black, and the stone crumbles into a useless, greasy lump of cheap coal right inside its velvet box. So, I pose this question to the forum: What cut of diamond do the men of the internet prefer for an engagement ring? Will it be a princess cut with sharp, unforgiving edges? Or perhaps a pear shape, designed to mimic the desperate tears of the women they intend to trap? 💧
