The bible says if you act like you are better than others, God will lower your social value.
This does not always mean you will be poor, it might mean, you will become very immoral and be tormented by God after you die for your sins or before you die for your sins, while getting cancer or facing violent and painful deaths.
I know extremely high status people that became poor overnight because they choose to exploit or disrespect those that had less status than them.
Jesus also says he judges you by your intentions. If you help others, but you do it for the wrong reasons, you might be punished instead of rewarded for trying to help them.

Humility is important because it orders your heart towards the need we have for redemption (though Charity is most important). Christian faith relies on Christ's redemptive suffering, death, AND resurrection, which he did to bring us back to Him. Humility is the removal of the spiritual blindness that so many have: it is an acknowledgement that we desperately need Christ's redeeming sacrifice for the redeeming of our sins.
For example, look at the parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector: we see there the pride of a religious leader, spiritually blind to his sins because of his education or status or the fact that there is no sin in him simply because he was born within Judea, set against the repentance of the tax collector, who has acknowledged his sinfulness and his bad actions. God can work with the attitude of the tax collector because he is humble and open to God's grace, where the Pharisse refuses to see his own sinfulness.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,
and saves the crushed in spirit. -Psalm 34:18
God's grace can only work in us if we are open to cooperate with it. That is His design for our salvation and it respects our free will because He is a Father, and wants us to love Him as His children, not because we are robots.
