Insecurities and wealth. Most of them these days are not climbers. They are rich people on guided tours carried on the backs of local sherpas. They aren't even distant cousins of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The traffic jam at the summit is hilarious.
Risk takers who like thrills and people who feel the need to be unique. Very few people a year can afford or even get permits to do so. And even fewer get to the top because so many people are trying to do it in a very narrow window of weather.
So, it's a big challenge. This attracts a lot of type As etc...
There are people tht like to tell people that they did it. Just like those people in the submarine that went to look at the Titanic.
They are the same jerks that send out letters at Christmas to let everyone know that they went on an expansive vacation.
It's like smoking or drinking. people know it's bad, but they ignore that for some height of experience.
It be quite a rush to get to the top of the world like that.
not something I will ever do...
"Because... it's there! That's why. Thank you, Mr. Mallory."
- Rob Hall, Everest
Exactly. That's what the film is about.
Seeking thrill and fame or want to challenge themselves? I don't know would never do it myself.
What motivates people to race motorcycles, scuba dive, or sky dive?
No idea -- bragging rights? It's a zoo up there, and there's about a 1% mortality rate.
I would only try it if I was an expert mountaineer (which I'm not). I wouldn't pay someone else to drag me to the summit.
Not very many can climb it and make it to the top. It's an accomplishment note. buckett list. Easier to go up then down in the sea.
Because they believe that they are invincible.
For the thrills.
Nah, it's just nice to smoke a cigarette on the summit.
Because they are stupid
Passion to be winner and unique, K2 is more tough.
stupidity. simple really.
The challenge

Climbing Everest is like chasing a real‑life final boss 💀🏔️
As a gamer, I totally get the pull. People want the ultimate achievement, something that proves their limits didn’t stop them. It’s about pride, adventure, and the feeling of standing where so few ever have. Some are drawn by glory, others by personal growth.
Just like beating a brutal game, the risk makes the victory feel legendary.
