Do you love anything enough to risk your life and livelihood for it?

Anything, not anyone. I know your kids are technically things, but that’s not the point here. The point is your passion. What do you love to do so much that you don’t care if it kills you or significantly alters your quality of life for the worse. What if your favorite thing is very safe and comfortable, though? Would you still do it if it could hurt you badly or kill you?

@Chazmatazz269 as usual this is a great question. I had to think about it pretty hard. I'm pretty risk averse. I've sat on this since you asked it and (setting aside my wife and family) I don't think there's anything I'd risk my livelihood for. Life is somewhat of a different discussion. I joined the Navy. There is some element of risk there so maybe, possibly, that might count. I really love running, and some of the roads and trails I run on aren't the safest.

But beyond this probably no. But, I don't think it's for lack of passion. Part of it, I think, is where I am in life, right? There's not a lot that I'm doing that risks life or livelihood. I mean, I'd love to learn how to dive trimix and dive on the Andrea Doria off Nantucket but that's not happening soon.

So, cool question, but the short answer is no.

I think propaganda has changed the way we perceive military service. I know there are assignments that are safer than others, but service members rarely get a choice in the matter. That’s definitely a life and livelihood sacrifice in my opinion. Thank you!

There are quite a few activities that I love that could potentially be dangerous but are usually perceived as being safe.

I've gone to the absolute end of my strength to keep my boat from being sucked under a root-wad in a fast-flowing river, but I was continually gauging my chances of success versus being sucked under myself.

I won.

If I'd thought that I was going to lose my life I would have let the boat go under.

I'm darned lucky to have had the strength, knowledge, skill, and luck to accomplish the task because my pride was also very much present that day as well.
Truth be told, strength-wise, I'm nowhere near the man I used to be.
I was amazed that I succeeded.
It was like those stories you hear about people lifting cars in critical situations.

As a matter of fact, since my pride is intact, I'll relate to you a bit more of the story.

Within a short time of my rescuing my own boat, as I was resting up on the gravel bar close to the root-wad, another boat came downstream and got trapped in the same root-wad.
The boat, a bit larger than mine, belonged to the local volunteer fire-and-rescue department and was occupied by two overly large young men, probably less than half my age.
I quickly saw that they were in trouble and rescued them as well.

Yep, I rescued the fire and rescue squad.

My desire to be humble fights my love of telling that story.

I guess we know which side won that argument this time.

Driving. I used to race cars to deal with my depression. I was lonely, broke as a joke and hated almost everything about my life but getting on an empty road early in the morning and threading my car through turns just made me feel so happy. There was a time where it was the only thing that could make me smile. I'm pretty good at drifting too. Used to have people pay me to teach them.

After I watched fast and furious, I taught myself how to do the trick where he looks into the girls eyes and floors it. Super dangerous, you absolutely should not do it unless you really know what you're doing.

But yea I'm a little older now, if I was going to go crazy like I did when I was 19, I'd most likely take it to a track.

I'm not afraid to die but I do not like pain so I would need a strong reason and an acceptable death. For example, a humanitarian project that exposes me to disease - something I might do if I have to. I would not expose myself to torture for a social or political cause cause I'm not that brave.

well, I was really passionate about running. I ran several marathons. T often trained while I was injured and I damaged my achilles tendon. It is probably why I need a hip replacement too.
