I spent 8 years installing satellite TV systems, the last 3 of which was doing commercial work, and a good amount of that in San Francisco. I spent a lot of time climbing on vertical fire escapes 8 stories above the sidewalk, and on the tops of hotels and other high-rises.

We often had to run cable down the sides of buildings, using the fire escapes, and let me tell you, those 100-year-old fire escapes, especially the ones with vertical ladders - and not very confidence-inspiring. And hanging off of them with one elbow hooked around the ladder while you drilled a hole in the wall with your other hand, 12 stories up - isn't for the faint of heart.

We also put in a bunch of systems at the "new" San Jose airport about 10 years ago - and we could only work between 11pm-5am, when the airport was closed, as that's the only time you could bring tools into the secure areas. If you're ever in the SJ airport, and you see a bunch of restaurants and bars with TVs in them, that's weeks of middle-of-the-night installation work we did back then.

It definitely isn't. And I'm happy not to have to be doing that anymore. I still get on ladders and roofs from time to time, but it's rarely more than 3 stories up these days, and even then, not nearly as often as the satellite days.

I've been at the top of some lookout towers at some state parks, I think they were about 300 ft high, & climbed to the top of a Mayan temple pyramid. It was high but I don't know how much.

I've dove off a 10 meter diving platform.

I have vertigo. I don’t do ladders, escalators, or elevators with glass. I went to the CN tower ones, cried all the way up, eyes closed the whole tour, and cried all the way down. Worse experience 1.5/10.

I’m not afraid of heights. I don’t know… Sat on the edge of Grand Canyon cliffs, went to the top of a number of different mountains in the Rockies, Appalachians, Cascades, etc. I’ve been in a lot of tall buildings. I’ve scaled 100ish foot trees and rock faces in a climbing harness and repelled down, flown in airplanes, etc. I guess it all depends on your interpretation of the word climb...

Heights don't bother me, unless I don't have something solid to hand on to. I have done a little bit of climbing, nothing serious, and find that fun to do. As a kid, I used to like climbing up trees as far as I could get.

Same man. Me and my brother always climbed like every tree possible as kids. And some of those towers get intense! Especially when your almost to the top and have to start climbing a ladder that's at like a 70 degree angle.

What sort of work do you fellas do? I see you have quality harnesses with double tie-offs. I have to work at height as well although I am not crazy about it... especially the damn ladders when you can't tie off.

I actually don't do this anymore. Quit a few months back. But I worked for a local internet provider and it was line of site based internet. Definitely quality gear! But ended up making a lot of frankin-parts just to get by.. Everything would always fail..

Yeah i just do general labor/contract work now. So i work for myself. Lots of construction and demo mostly. Take it down then rebuild it.
Climbing gets old! Especially in winter time.. Up on a tower. Freezing cold. Or the ladders on a water tower that turn into almost a 70 degree angle at the top.. And we generally climbed alone... That fear of falling into your harness was always in the back of my head

Honestly I was, but over the few times I was on a plane, it cured that. The tallest thing I have ever climbed was a 50 foot tree. That was terrifying for me to do so.
